Ferrous or non-ferrous: how to tell your metals apart
Ferrous metals are mostly iron, so a magnet sticks to them. Steel and cast iron are the ferrous metals you will see on most sites: beams, sheet, rebar, machinery and old racking.
Non-ferrous metals have no iron in them, so a magnet does not stick. Copper, brass, aluminium, the copper in cable and the lead in batteries are all non-ferrous, and they earn more per kilo than steel. Radiators are non-ferrous too.
Stainless steel is ferrous too, because it is an iron alloy. The common grades are not magnetic, though, and it is priced well above mild steel. Electric motors and white goods are mostly steel with copper or aluminium inside, so we price them on that mix.
Mixed loads in one pick-up
Most sites have more than one metal. A plumber's pile mixes copper pipe, brass fittings and steel. A workshop's pile mixes radiators, batteries and steel offcuts. We take the lot in one pick-up and price each metal by its own grade.
Sorting before we arrive lifts the price. Keep copper, brass, aluminium and steel apart, and pull plastic and rubber off where it is quick to do. Our page on scrap metal pick-up shows how a collection works.
How we price scrap metal
Every quote rests on three things: the metal, its grade and the weight. The grade comes down to how clean the metal is. Paint, plastic, rubber and other metals attached all lower it.
The world market drives the base price and changes daily, so scrap rates move too, and each quote uses today's price. For more on what moves prices, read scrap metal prices in Brisbane.
Scrap metal recycling that pays
Every metal on this page goes on to be recycled, not landfilled. Steel goes back to steel mills, while copper, brass and aluminium go to smelters and foundries that turn them into new metal. Metal can go round again and again, which saves mining new ore. For your company, selling scrap turns waste into income and gives your waste management records a clear recycling figure. We are metal recyclers who come to you, so the process starts with a few photos.
Catalytic converters, quoted by the code on each
We also buy used catalytic converters, whether you have one or a box full. They have a page of their own, because we quote each one on the code stamped on its shell. Go to sell your catalytic converters to send photos and codes.
Who sells scrap metal to Forge Recyclers
We buy from tradies, builders, manufacturers, workshops and demolition crews, across most industries that make metal waste. Say what you have and roughly how much, and you'll get a quote for the lot. Businesses with a steady stream of scrap can ask about a regular pick-up.
The who we help section shows what we collect from each kind of business. We do not collect from homes at the moment.

Every metal we buy, by group
Ferrous metals contain iron and non-ferrous metals don't. One pick-up can take both: tap a metal to see what we take.
Non-ferrous metals
No iron in them, so a magnet won't stick. They are worth more per kilo than steel.
Ferrous metals
Steel and iron, which a magnet sticks to, and stainless steel, an iron alloy graded on its own.
Mixed-metal items
Things made of more than one material, such as cable, motors and converters.
What Forge Recyclers can't take
For safety, we can't take these, even mixed in with metal. Not sure about an item? Ask us before the pick-up.
- Asbestos
- Explosives and ammunition
- Fuel and other flammables

Questions about ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal
What is the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal?
Ferrous metals, such as steel and cast iron, are mostly iron, so a magnet sticks to them. Non-ferrous metals, such as copper, brass, aluminium and lead, have no iron in them and earn more per kilo. Stainless steel is an iron alloy, but the common grades are not magnetic, and it is priced well above mild steel.
Do you buy mixed scrap metal?
Yes. Most loads mix two or more metals, and one pick-up can take them all. Sorting copper, brass, aluminium and steel into separate piles before we arrive lifts the price, because we price each metal on its own grade.
What is my scrap metal worth?
Three things set the price: which metal it is, how clean it is and how much it weighs. Copper and brass earn far more per kilo than steel, and the market moves daily, so we quote on the day. Send photos and we quote on what you have.
Do you buy catalytic converters?
Yes, single converters or whole lots. We quote from photos and the code stamped on each one. Our catalytic converters page explains how to send them.
Is there anything you do not take?
We do not take asbestos, explosives or ammunition, fuel or other flammables, sealed gas cylinders, corrosive or poisonous chemicals, medical or biohazard waste, radioactive material or household rubbish.
Do you collect from homes?
No, not for now. Our pick-ups are for trades and businesses: building and demolition sites, workshops, factories and depots.
