Heavy steel scrap: rusty beams, plate offcuts, a cast-iron bath and old fencing wire

Brisbane scrap steel buyers who collect from your site

Offcuts, old beams, sheet and worn-out machinery take up room on a site long after the job that made them. Steel and cast iron are ferrous metals: they are mostly iron, so a magnet sticks to them. Forge Recyclers buys scrap steel and iron in Brisbane and across South East Queensland, and we collect it from your site. Fabricators, builders, demolition crews and workshops can send photos of the pile and get a quote.

Types of scrap steel and iron we buy

  • Heavy steel

Beams, columns, plate, thick pipe and heavy offcuts.

  • Light steel and sheet

Roofing, cladding, sheet offcuts, purlins, shelving and shed frames.

  • Rebar and mesh

Reinforcing bar and mesh offcuts from slabs, footings and precast work.

  • Cast iron

Machine bases, brake discs and drums, engine blocks and cast pipe.

  • Galvanised and painted steel

Fencing, posts, rails and grating. The zinc coat does not stop it being recycled.

  • Machinery and racking

Old machines, pallet racking, frames and plant past repair.

  • Stainless steel

Graded on its own, so keep it apart from mild steel.

Why sell your scrap steel to Forge Recyclers

  • We come to your site. Send photos of the biggest pieces and how we get to them, and we plan the pick-up around that.
  • Heavy steel, sheet and cast iron graded apart. Each has its own grade, and clean steel earns more than steel with concrete or timber on it.
  • A quote before anything moves. Send photos, get a quote back, then the pick-up.
  • Non-ferrous on the same trip. Copper, brass and aluminium are worth far more than steel, so pull them out and we buy them too.

Scrap steel prices in Brisbane: what your steel is worth

We price steel by grade and weight. Heavy steel, light sheet and cast iron each have their own grade. Clean steel earns more than steel with concrete, timber or rubber still on it. The world steel market drives the price, and it moves every day. Send photos and we quote today's price for the whole load.

A little sorting lifts the grade:

  • Pull out copper, brass and aluminium first. These non-ferrous metals are worth more on their own, and steel mills cannot take copper back out of molten steel.
  • Keep mild steel, stainless steel and cast iron in separate piles.
  • Knock off loose concrete and cut away timber where it is quick to do.

Who sells us scrap steel

Steel scrap turns up in most industries we work with. Fabricators and engineering shops fill bins with offcuts, drops and plate skeletons. Builders have rebar, mesh and framing offcuts after each stage of a job. Demolition and strip-out crews clear out structural steel, roofing and racking. Workshops and factories retire machines, benches and old plant.

There is a page for each kind of business: manufacturing and workshops, construction and demolition and site clearance.

Steel recycling in Brisbane

Steel is the most recycled material in the world, and its magnetism makes it easy to sort from other waste. Metal recyclers sort and cut scrap steel, and steel mills melt it into new beams, sheet and bar. Each tonne of scrap a steelmaker uses saves about 1.4 tonnes of iron ore and 740 kg of coal, according to worldsteel. For your business, that means income from your offcuts, less steel in the skip and a recycling figure for your waste management records.

Scrap steel collection from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast

Steel is heavy, so send photos that show the biggest pieces. Add a little information about how much there is and how we get to it. We collect from factories, building sites and demolition jobs between the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, including industrial areas such as Geebung and Slacks Creek. The process is the same for a bin of offcuts or a whole strip-out: photos, a quote, then the pick-up. Larger businesses can read about commercial scrap metal pick-ups.

Three steps to sell your scrap steel

  1. Send photos and details

Call us, or use the quote form and add a few photos. Tell us what you have, roughly how much, and your suburb.

  2. Get your quote

We reply with a quote. If you are happy with it, we book the pick-up.

  3. We pick it up

We collect from your site and pay you for the metal.

Steel, iron and the other scrap metals we buy

Ferrous metals contain iron and non-ferrous metals don't. One pick-up can take both: tap a metal to see what we take.

Non-ferrous metals

No iron in them, so a magnet won't stick. They are worth more per kilo than steel.

Ferrous metals

Steel and iron, which a magnet sticks to, and stainless steel, an iron alloy graded on its own.

Mixed-metal items

Things made of more than one material, such as cable, motors and converters.

What Forge Recyclers can't take

For safety, we can't take these, even mixed in with metal. Not sure about an item? Ask us before the pick-up.

  • Asbestos
  • Explosives and ammunition
  • Fuel and other flammables
  • Sealed gas cylinders
  • Corrosive or poisonous chemicals
  • Medical or biohazard waste
  • Radioactive material
  • Household rubbish

Questions about selling scrap steel

How much is scrap steel per kg in Brisbane?

We quote steel on its grade, its weight and the steel market on the day. Thick, clean steel grades above thin sheet, and above steel with concrete or timber still attached. Send photos that show the size of the pile and the biggest pieces, and we reply with today's price.

What is the difference between heavy and light steel?

Heavy steel is thick and stiff: beams, plate, axles and heavy offcuts. Light steel bends by hand, such as roofing, sheet, shelving and shed frames. They sit in different grades, so keep them in separate piles.

Do you buy scrap iron and cast iron?

Yes. Machine bases, brake discs and drums, engine blocks and old cast pipe are all cast iron. It is brittle and can shatter, so do not try to break big pieces with a hammer. Send photos and we price it as its own grade.

Is steel a ferrous metal?

Yes. Steel and cast iron are ferrous metals, which means they are mostly iron and a magnet sticks to them. Stainless steel is an iron alloy too, but the common grades do not stick to a magnet, and we price stainless apart from mild steel.

Can I leave concrete or timber on the steel?

Send a photo first and we will tell you. Concrete, timber and rubber add weight but no metal, so the cleaner the steel, the better the grade. On a big load, knocking off loose concrete can lift the quote.

Do you offer scrap steel collection from building and demolition sites?

Yes. We collect from demolition jobs, building sites, factories and workshops across South East Queensland. Send photos of the steel and the access, and ask about a regular pick-up if the steel keeps coming.
