Old electric motors and alternators, one cut open to show its copper windings

Brisbane electric motor scrap buyers who collect from your site

A burnt-out motor is still full of metal: copper or aluminium windings inside a steel or cast iron body. Forge Recyclers buys electric motor scrap in Brisbane and across South East Queensland from electricians, motor rewinders, mechanics, refrigeration techs and factories. We collect it from your site, so getting rid of old motors starts with one message. Send photos of the motors and their nameplates, and we reply with a quote.

Types of electric motor scrap we buy

  • Industrial motors

Single and three-phase motors from pumps, fans, conveyors and machinery.

  • Pump and fan sets

Motors still coupled to a pump, fan or blower.

  • Geared motors

Motors with a gearbox or reducer attached.

  • Compressors

Why sell your scrap electric motors to Forge Recyclers

  • Working or burnt out. The value is in the metal, so a dead motor is still worth selling.
  • Copper-wound motors earn more. We price motors on their weight and what is inside them.
  • A quote before the pick-up. Tell us how many you have and send photos.
  • Cable and copper on the same trip. One pick-up can take the motors with the rest of your scrap.

Electric motor scrap prices: what your motors are worth

We price motors by weight and by what is inside them. Copper-wound motors earn more than aluminium-wound ones. A bare motor earns more than one still bolted to a pump, gearbox or steel base. Working or burnt out, a motor's condition makes little difference, because the value is in the metal and the market price on the day we quote.

A few things help us price your motors:

  • Photograph each nameplate. It shows the size and often the maker.
  • Unbolt pumps, gearboxes and steel bases when it is quick to do.
  • Tell us if any motors or gearboxes still hold oil.
  • Put small motors in a crate or stillage so they are easy to load.

Who sells us scrap motors

Electricians and motor rewinders swap out failed motors and keep the old ones. Mechanics and auto electricians pull alternators and starters every week. Refrigeration and air-conditioning techs remove compressors and fan motors. Factories, pump businesses and plant rooms replace motors on machines and pump sets.

We buy from tradies, from manufacturing and workshops, and from demolition and site clearance crews clearing out plant rooms.

Electric motor recycling in Brisbane

Recycling electric motors starts with splitting each one into its main components. The steel or cast iron housing and the steel core go to steel mills. The copper or aluminium windings go to non-ferrous metal recycling, where smelters turn them into new metal. Motors are simple to recycle once they are apart, so in this recycling process very little of a motor ends up in landfills. For your business, old motors stop being waste you pay to remove and become metal we buy. The environmental gain is real too: recycled copper and steel are more sustainable than newly mined metal.

Electric motor pick-up from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast

Motors are heavy for their size, so tell us how many you have and roughly what the biggest one weighs. We collect from workshops, factories, plant rooms and job sites from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast. One pick-up can take the motors with your cable, copper and steel. The process is the same for one motor or a pallet: send photos, get a quote, then we book the pick-up. Our commercial scrap metal page explains how that works for larger sites.

Three steps to sell your scrap electric motors

  1. Send photos and details

Call us, or use the quote form and add a few photos. Tell us what you have, roughly how much, and your suburb.

  3. We pick it up

We collect from your site and pay you for the metal.

Motors and the other scrap metals we buy

Ferrous metals contain iron and non-ferrous metals don't. One pick-up can take both: tap a metal to see what we take.

Non-ferrous metals

No iron in them, so a magnet won't stick. They are worth more per kilo than steel.

Ferrous metals

Steel and iron, which a magnet sticks to, and stainless steel, an iron alloy graded on its own.

Mixed-metal items

Things made of more than one material, such as cable, motors and converters.

What Forge Recyclers can't take

For safety, we can't take these, even mixed in with metal. Not sure about an item? Ask us before the pick-up.

  • Asbestos
  • Explosives and ammunition
  • Fuel and other flammables
  • Sealed gas cylinders
  • Corrosive or poisonous chemicals
  • Medical or biohazard waste
  • Radioactive material
  • Household rubbish

Questions about selling scrap electric motors

What is electric motor scrap worth per kg?

We work it out from the weight, the metal inside and the copper price on the day. A copper-wound motor on its own earns the most per kilo. Aluminium windings or a pump still attached bring the price down. Send photos and the nameplates, and we quote today's price for the lot.

Do I need to strip the copper out first?

No. Stripping a motor is slow, heavy and sharp work, and we buy motors whole. If you choose to strip some anyway, keep the copper windings in their own bin, because they grade higher.

Are electric motors ferrous or non-ferrous scrap?

Both. Most of a motor's weight is a steel or cast iron body and a steel core, which are ferrous. The windings are copper or aluminium, which are non-ferrous. We buy the motor whole and price it on that mix.

Do you take compressors from fridges and air conditioners?

Yes. A licensed technician must recover the refrigerant before anyone scraps a compressor, so tell us whether that has happened when you send photos.

Do you buy alternators and starter motors?

Yes. They are small motors with copper windings and aluminium or steel cases. Workshops can keep them in a crate and add them to a mixed pick-up with radiators and batteries.

Who disconnects a motor before you collect it?

If the motor is wired to the supply, a licensed electrician must isolate and disconnect it. You can unplug a motor that runs from a plug and lead yourself. After that, we collect it from your site.
