Stainless steel scrap: a kitchen sink, benchtop offcuts and dented kegs on a pallet

Brisbane stainless steel scrap buyers who collect from your site

Stainless steel scrap earns more when you keep it out of the mild steel pile. Stainless is an iron alloy, but the common grades are not magnetic, and it is priced well above mild steel. Forge Recyclers buys stainless steel scrap in Brisbane and across South East Queensland from fabricators, commercial kitchen installers, food and beverage plants and builders. We pick it up from your site. Send photos and any grade stamps, and we reply with a quote.

Types of stainless steel scrap we buy

  • 304 offcuts and sheet

Sheet, plate, tube and offcuts from fabrication shops.

  • 316 stainless

Marine-grade fittings, pipe and plate, kept apart from 304.

  • Magnetic stainless

400-series grades such as 430 from panels, exhausts and appliances.

  • Kitchen and catering gear

Benches, sinks, shelving, trolleys and canopies from commercial kitchens.

  • Tanks and process equipment

Tanks, vessels, pipework and conveyors from breweries, dairies and food plants.

  • Turnings and swarf

Machining swarf, kept apart from mild steel swarf.

  • Handrails and balustrades

Posts, rails, wire and fittings from building and marine work.

Why sell your stainless steel scrap to Forge Recyclers

  • 304, 316 and magnetic grades priced apart. A sorted load does better than one mixed pile.
  • Collected from kitchens, plants and workshops. We pick it up from your refit, factory or fabrication shop.
  • A quote from photos and grade stamps. You see it before we collect anything.
  • Mild steel on the same trip. Add the steel and aluminium from the same job.

Stainless steel scrap prices in Brisbane: what it is worth

We price stainless by grade and weight. We price 316, 304 and the magnetic 400-series grades separately, so a sorted load does better than a mixed one. Clean, bright offcuts sit in the better grades. Mild steel brackets, plastic, rubber and food or chemical residue bring the grade down, and mixed piles lead to a lower price. Stainless prices move with the metal markets, so we quote today's price for your load.

Before you send photos:

  • Look for a grade stamp such as 304 or 316, and photograph it.
  • Hold a magnet to each piece. Most 304 and 316 barely react, while 430 sticks.
  • Unbolt mild steel legs, frames, brackets and plastic wheels.
  • Take control panels and electronics out of kitchen and process equipment.
  • Keep mild steel, stainless and aluminium offcuts apart from each other.

Who sells us stainless steel scrap

Fabricators and engineering shops cut 304 and 316 every day and build up offcuts and swarf. Commercial kitchen installers and shopfitters pull out benches, sinks and canopies on refits. Food, dairy and beverage plants replace tanks, pipework and conveyors. Boat builders and marine trades end up with 316 fittings and rail.

Stainless steel recycling in Brisbane

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium, often with nickel, and mills can recycle it again and again. The industry body worldstainless says 95% of stainless steel was recycled at the end of its life in 2019. Most of it became new stainless. Your offcuts and old benches return as new sheet, pipe and fittings, which saves mining fresh nickel and chromium. For a fabricator or food plant, a sorted pile of stainless turns waste into income and keeps metal out of landfill.

Stainless and the other scrap metals we buy

Ferrous metals contain iron and non-ferrous metals don't. One pick-up can take both: tap a metal to see what we take.

Non-ferrous metals

No iron in them, so a magnet won't stick. They are worth more per kilo than steel.

Ferrous metals

Steel and iron, which a magnet sticks to, and stainless steel, an iron alloy graded on its own.

Mixed-metal items

Things made of more than one material, such as cable, motors and converters.

What Forge Recyclers can't take

For safety, we can't take these, even mixed in with metal. Not sure about an item? Ask us before the pick-up.

  • Asbestos
  • Explosives and ammunition
  • Fuel and other flammables
  • Sealed gas cylinders
  • Corrosive or poisonous chemicals
  • Medical or biohazard waste
  • Radioactive material
  • Household rubbish

Questions about selling stainless steel scrap

How much is stainless steel scrap per kilogram in Brisbane?

Grade, cleanliness, weight and the metal markets on the day all set the price. Each grade has its own price, so 316, 304 and magnetic stainless sorted into separate piles earn more than one mixed pile. Send photos, with any grade stamps, and we quote today's price for what you have.

Is stainless steel ferrous or non-ferrous?

Stainless steel is an iron alloy, so strictly it is ferrous. Scrap buyers still grade and price it apart from mild steel, and well above it. Keep it out of the steel pile so it earns its own price.

A magnet sticks to my stainless. Is it still stainless?

It can be. The common 304 and 316 grades are non-magnetic, but grades such as 430 are magnetic, and bending or pressing can make 304 pull a little. Tell us what the magnet did when you send photos, and look for a grade stamp.

How do I tell 304 from 316?

Not by eye, because they look the same. 316 contains molybdenum, which helps it resist salt, so it turns up in marine fittings and food plants. Look for a stamp and tell us where the item came from.

Do you buy commercial kitchen equipment?

Yes. Benches, sinks, shelving, trolleys and canopies are good stainless scrap. Take off timber and plastic if you can. If a unit still has refrigerant or a gas connection, tell us before the pick-up.

Can you collect stainless from a factory or kitchen refit?

Yes. We collect from fabrication shops, food plants, kitchens under refit and building sites across South East Queensland. We are not collecting from homes at the moment.
